Shadows in the Rainbow - LGBT Student Solidarity Society of Durban University of Technology
____The organization was founded by a collective of
concerned student gay activists at the Durban University of Technology
who after observing the plight of this minority group within South
African tertiary education institutions, the black majority, the
intra-politics within the LGBTIA community itself and Africa in general
went on to establish a gay and lesbian student society on campus called Shadows in the Rainbow DUT Gay and Lesbian Society.
The key objective of the student society thus became to incubate youth gay activists who upon receiving their university qualification would plough back into their respective communities the skills they have learnt about gay activism.
The student society is thus in the process of registering with the department of social development as a voluntary association and non party-political to be spearheaded by the alumni of DUT.The association will focus on development issues of the LGBTIA community with emphasis on the black bloc and the LGBTIA community in disadvantaged/rural areas so to make provision for this programmatic approach that will ensure skills are circulated even after students have left university.
